[News] MNet Director Shin Hyung Kwan: "SM Singers Will Perform at this Years MAMA

SM Entertainment’s singers are predicted to appear at Mnet’s music festival MAMA.

At the press conference of “Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA)” held at the CGV Complex at Seoul’s Mapo-gu Sangamdong on November 1st at 11am, the attendees were CJ E&M Representative Kim Sung Su, Senior Vice-President Wee Wei Kiat of Singapore broadcasting company MediaCorp, Director Su Siew Kong of Singapore Tourism Board, Mnet’s Production Director Shin Hyung Kwan and Director Kim Dong Joon.

When asked if it is possible for SM Entertainment singers to make an appearance, Director Shin Hyung Kwan officially announced, “The viewers will be able to see SM singers at this year’s MAMA”.

The conflict between Mnet and SM Entertainment regarding the issue of music profits has recently been resolved. In actual fact, Super Junior etc have also made their comeback stages on Mnet’s “M!Countdown”.

Further, on the final MAMA nominees revealed on the same day, big-name SM singers such as TVXQ (Male Group, Best Dance Performance for Male Group), SNSD (Female Group), and Super Junior (Male Group, Best Dance Performance for Male Group) etc came up on the list.

The glamorous curtains of “2011 MAMA” will be raised on November 29 at 7pm at Singapore’s representative performance venue, the Singapore Indorr Stadium.

Last year, the “2010 MAMA” was held at Macau, while this year’s award ceremony has been decided to be in Singapore. Once again, this is a plan to establish a foundation for Asia K-pop festivals which will move out of domestic Korean territory.

The “2011 MAMA” will adopt the main concept of “Music Makes One”, a dream which binds the world as one through music that surpasses Asian boundaries. It is a visionary plan which involves not just Korean artistes which lead the K-pop fever, but also includes artistes from various Asian countries and global artistes coming together at a music festival to wrap up this past year in a grand fashion.

'Superstar K' to hold auditions overseas

The popular cable show modeled after “American Idol” will hold sessions in Tokyo, Sendai and Osaka, as well as Beijing and New York in June. Auditions for local talent are currently being held in eight locations around Korea.

“Superstar K” will hold auditions in Japan, China and the United States this summer to select contestants for the third season of the talent show, Mnet said Tuesday.

“We launched ‘Superstar K’ in order to give a chance to aspiring singers, mostly comprising of people who have wanted to sing but didn’t have the opportunity to do so. We decided to provide these services so that people can participate more easily,” said Kim Ki-woong, director of “Superstar K.”

Last season’s “Superstar K” created a sensation as John Park, a Korean-American who appeared in “American Idol,” took part in the competition. The eventual winner, Huh Gak, a ventilator repairman, also became a household name.

“Considering how travel remains difficult in eastern Japan after the earthquakes, we decided to go there ourselves,” said organizers of the program through a press release.

Participants in each city will take part in a two-part screening process. Contenders from Korea and Japan will compete against one another in a third round, while those that make the cut will vie in a fourth and final screening against participants from New York and Beijing.

The latter, called “Super Week,” will be held in Seoul in August, and organizers will provide transportation and accommodation for those traveling from overseas as well as those from Jeju Island.
The program’s popularity spread overseas, particularly in Japan. Some 90 percent of applicants from the neighboring coutnry this year are Japanese, unlike the strong ethnic Korean demographics of hopefuls in Beijing and New York, said Mnet.

The winner will be entitled to a cash prize of $500,000, concert opportunities and a recording contract.

Seungri talks about G-Dragon’s income from royalties

On a recent broadcast of Mnet’s ‘Beatles Code,’ Big Bang’s maknae Seungri revealed G-Dragon’s income from royalties.

In this episode, Seungri–along with Daesung–made an appearance on the show and said, “G-Dragon hyung is currently considered #1 in the Copyright Association… He’s even higher than composer Cho Young Soo.”

According to Seungri, G-Dragon’s income from royalties is higher than the income professional composers get from copyrights. He stated, “G-Dragon has 120 registered tracks under his name. These tracks were not meant to be solely Big Bang’s, but also for his solo album, Taeyang, Seungri, 2NE1, and Uhm Jung Hwa. He’s composed and participated in countless songs.”

In response, MC Yoon Jong Shin commented, “Do you know how much G-Dragon gets paid through royalties?”

Seungri answered, “Because I’ve always had an interest in market researching, I do know his income through royalties,” shocking even Daesung.

Meanwhile, Seungri revealed that he had an interest in education, culture, and business. He even went on to say, “I am operating an academy. It is currently located in my hometown of Gwangju. There is one that opened in Daejeon this year and I’m preparing to open another one in Incheon.”

Daesung almost didn’t become a Big Bang member because of his fashion style

Big Bang’s Daesung revealed that he was once in danger of getting cut from the group.

Daesung and Seungri recently guested on Mnet’s “Beatles Code” and talked about their fashion styles. Daesung also talked about the time when he met Seungri for the first time, saying, “Seungri likes clothes like denim jackets, and he was wearing one when we met for the first time. If you had seen him back then, you would’ve also thought that he couldn’t wear clothes well.”

Seungri countered by saying, “When I saw Daesung for the first time, he was carrying a big tank of purified water. I didn’t think he was an idol trainee, but a water delivery man instead.”

Daesung elaborated about his lacking sense of fashion, and said, “Before our debut, I was practicing very hard in our practice room and our stylist came at 2AM and asked me go to shopping for clothes with her. I asked her why we were going shopping in the middle of the night and she told me that our CEO was going to cut me from the team if she couldn’t fix my fashion style in a week. I almost didn’t become a Big Bang member because I couldn’t wear clothes well.”

He showed his thanks for his stylist by saying, “My stylist worked really hard at that time. She continued to work really hard and so I’m here now.”

Seungri got his moment of spotlight when he revealed, “When I was carrying out my solo promotions, I found my own style. After that, my poses [for photoshoots] became more varied.”

Get to know the current trend in South Korean men through Big Bang

Note: This is an article from Kan Fun, a newly-launched newspaper published weekly in Japan about Korean entertainment. The person who wrote this article is Moon Eun Sil, a writer for Mnet M!Countdown. This isn't exactly news but more of a feature article meant to entertain.

For 2011, there are 3 types of men who are currently in the trend in South Korea. Let's get to know them through the members of BIGBANG, who have been topping music charts since their comeback.

Type #1 : "Kka-do-nam"
This term comes from "kkachildan dosi namja" which means "rough urban men". Hyun Bin, who acted as a rich man in the drama, Secret Garden, can be described as such. In the music scene, BIGBANG's G-Dragon clearly personifies this type.

"Oppa, look at me just once!" G-Dragon rarely responds to this kind of request and usually doesn't make eye contact. This is especially true when he's not in a good condition. But still, no one can get mad at his character because when fans say, "Oppa is the coolest!", he gets shy, can't close his mouth and just smiles. Everyone knows he has a pure heart.

If you want to attract G-Dragon's "kka-do-nam" style, you have to have a rough attitude 9 times more than him. Maybe after that, you can make him smile even just once.

Type #2: "Cha-do-nam"
Short for "chagaun dosi namja" or "cold/cool urban men". Kim Hyun Joong, who starred in Playful Kiss, exemplifies this type the best. BIGBANG's T.O.P can also be classified under this type because he has shown an image of someone who's reserved and likes being alone. With his somber look, he clearly epitomizes this type of man.

However, T.O.P can also do gags in front of the camera. "I got atopy so I can change my name now from T.O.P to Atopy" Generally, T.O.P looks cool but he can also be funny especially to people that he can open himself up to. This is the fascination of a "cha-do-nam".

If you attract a "cha-do-nam" style like T.O.P, you should always be on the watch for his sudden jokes.

Type #3 "Tta-do-nam"
This term is short for "ttatteushan dosi namja" or "warm urban men". Won Bin, who treats a child actress kindly in the movie, Ahjussi, is under this type. Among the members of BIGBANG, it can be said that Seungri falls under this category. He is  the opposite of his two older brothers who were described earlier as "rough" and "cold" men.

Seungri has a rap version of "Thank you, staff!" which he uses to cheer up people he works with when they're having a difficult time. He's the friendly cute boy type who can create a cheerful atmosphere in the studio with his antics. Because of this, he has a lot fans especially older women.

If you want to attract a guy with a "tta-do-nam" style, you should always be with him and laugh together.

Having all these 3 types in their group, BIGBANG is surely part of this trend right now. When they came back in the music scene, they swept various music charts. We look forward to seeing what other trends they will show us in the future.

Only 3 types were listed and they didn't classify which type Daesung and Taeyang fall under. What do you think?^^

Big Bang and CNBlue take over weekend live music shows

CNBLUE and Big Bang each scored a win on weekly live music shows that aired on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

CNBLUE’s song “Intuition” was placed at No. 1 on KBS’ “Music Bank” for the third time as of last Friday. This is the song's seventh win on a televised music show following its three crowns on music cable channel Mnet’s “M! CountDown” which airs on Thursdays and single trophy SBS’ music program “Inkigayo” last Sunday.

“Intuition,” a song about one's ominous feeling of breaking up with a girlfriend, is from CNBLUE’s first regular album “FIRST STEP” that has sold over 100,000 copies nationwide since its release last month.

“We are so happy we're receiving so much love these days. It’s almost like a dream,” said CNBLUE's members in their acceptance speech the same day. “Thank you so much and we hope you like our follow-up songs ahead.”

★ On this Sunday’s “Inkigayo” show, it was Big Bang’s “LOVE SONG” that won the latest Mutizen Award, in the week of the song's debut.

“LOVE SONG” which expresses feelings after a love has passed away, is one of the title tracks to their special limited edition album released early this month.

Co-composed and written by G-Dragon and Teddy, the music incorporates elements of electronica and modern rock.

“We’re happy to win this award upon the first week of our return. We shall take it as a sign to work harder,” said the group’s leader G-Dragon as he went on to thank people in their agency who helped along the way.

Meanwhile other singers that appeared on the two live music shows over the weekend included U-Kiss, 4minute, Brave Girls, Rainbow, Clover, Dalmatian, Handsome People, Rania and Maya.

Behind the scenes of "M SOUNDPLEX" - Big Bang episode

"M SOUNDPLEX" launched by cable music channel Mnet on February 26 is a program which says music
is about having fun, regardless of genre. This motto has been carried since the show's first episode which
starred Indie band 10cm, Lee Juck and singers from singing competition "Superstar K" up till Big Bang's
episode which is waiting to go on air. Starting this week, "10Asia" will reveal the process through which
this new space and culture for having fun is created, along with stories from behind the scenes, through the
lips of "M SOUNDPLEX" producer Lee Sang-yoon. That first stage is Big Bang's.

"I'm sorry I'm late," G-Dragon said while bowing to a member of the crew for "M SOUNDPLEX." Big Bang
had not been able to appear for the show's rehearsal as promised due to a problem another TV
program had with its schedule. The rehearsal had been planned for 2 p.m. but it was only after 5
p.m. that Big Bang was able to leave from their former engagement. Big Bang was professional,
hurriedly getting ready while apologizing for being late when it actually was not their fault, but
whether the show could start rolling in time for its recording set for 8 p.m. was the problem, not
the fact that they were not able to make it to the rehearsal.

This is always the case you have with television programs. Problems are bound to come up, even when you
think you have prepared extensively. The important thing is to cover that problem so that it does not show
instead of dwell on it. It looked like the show could get started in time for the recording if the band and
chorus finished rehearsing before Big Bang arrived and we quickly went through the camera rehearsal.
Although even after that, unexpected problems would arise.

However, the real problem occurred after they arrived. It turned out that the sound source Big Bang's
band had prepared was slightly different from the one our producers had prepared. For several days,
we had worked on a variety of aspects including how to show the stage, in what angle the camera would
travel and the timing of the cut-aways based on the lyrics and sound source we had to their songs. So while
we go this sorted out, the members of Big Bang started on their camera rehearsal. This too did not
go as well as we thought it would. With each of the members trying to re-adjust their movements and test
it out with producers to give the best performance possible for their solo stages, before we knew it, we were
already 30 minutes past recording time. Members of the crew started to raise their voices from irritation and
the audience started to rumble. How did things get to this state? Will we be able to record the show properly?
The show is what is important although I was oppressed with the pressure in having to prepare Big Bang's
performances and concern that the audience must be bored from having waited for the recording
since 8 a.m.

Big Bang, worn out and probably with more to worry over their muddled schedule, truly did their best, not only in regards to showing their singing and dancing. During the time they talked with the show's
host Chung Won-young and Park Gyeong-lim, they told stories they had never mentioned before for the
show and their fans. Then while Park gave the audience a good laugh with one of her own past songs, Big
Bang prepared for their final performance. And their encore performance for song "Lie," the highlight
of the day, started. They did not have an MR for the song, only the sound of the guitar, but the
sound was rich and their energy, combined with the excitement of the audience, filled up the
entire venue. It was the moment that everybody, both the performer and watcher, had fun together.
Maybe it was for that single moment that I had been so worried since early morning.

Yoo Ah In’s new reality show on Mnet ‘Launch My Life’ airs this week!

Actor Yoo Ah In will star in a reality show for the first time in his life!
Yoo Ah In has been cast for the main role in a fashion business reality program on Mnet titled ‘Launch My Life.’ The show is scheduled to air on the 24th and he’s going to be following the footsteps of Seo In Young, who starred in the show’s previous season.
In ‘Seo In Young’s Launch My Life,‘ she showed the process of launching her own bag working as a creative director for French brand Nana Ricci. In ‘Yoo Ah In’s Launch My Life,’ Yoo Ah In will show the collaboration process between casual brand ‘JACK&JILL’ and ‘HAZZYS.’
He will also be showing a side of himself that was never shown in front of camera before.
There is a certain stereotype about Yoo Ah In because he is rarely exposed to the public,” said producer Lee Seon Young. “We thought he would be rebellious, courageous, fashionable and sometimes lonely.” She explained, “through the show, we didn’t try to break that stereotype. But to show everything about him as he is because that kind of prejudice is also part of him.
She also added, “We learned through the reality show that Yoo Ah In is very passionate about fashion. So everyone can be excited about this.”
However, Yoo Ah In stated that he originally worried about the production. “I questioned if what I’m showing is actually real,” said Yoo Ah In. “Is showing 100% of myself real and showing only 50% not? I tried my best to show the most of myself in the show. And I also had much opportunity to think about myself. Please enjoy the show.”
Mnet ‘Yoo Ah In’s Launch My Life’ airs on the 24th at 11 pm.
