2NE1′s Dara and CL return to Korea for ‘YG Family Concert’ rehearsal

On November 26th, 2NE1‘s CL and Sandara Park shared a fresh selca through the latter’s me2day to commemorate their return to Korea.

Sandara wrote, “Arrived in Korea!  Came here to practice for the YG Family Concert!  All the artists are coming to meet today!  The sunbaenims are coming in one by one! doogeun doogeun, kong dak kong dak! [onomatopoeia for heartbeat].  Today’s fashion is about utilizing a face mask.  Sandara and CL’s 2-set selca!  How is it?

The photo also contained a caption that read, “The [main] point of this photo! Chae Rin‘s [CL's real name] cute eyes that can only be seen in the dorms.”

Fans were delighted to see the return of the infamous face masks from 2NE1′s “Ugly” MV, especially since they allowed CL to keep her edgy style even though she dressed down and didn’t wear any makeup.
Netizens complimented, “So pretty~” and “CL looks so innocent. Please show us this side more often.”
In related news, the “2011 YG Family Concert” will take place at the Seoul Olympic Stadium on December 3rd and 4th.

YG’s New Girl Group includes “No Plastic Surgery” Clause in Contract!

YG’s New Girl Group includes “No Plastic Surgery” Clause in Contract!
It was reported today that YG Entertainment included a “no plastic surgery” clause in the contract with their new seven-member girl group set to debut in the first half of next year.
According to local media OSEN, an official from YGE was quoted as saying, “The new girl group will be comprised of members that had no plastic surgeries. They also included a ‘no plastic surgery’ clause in their contract with Chairman Yang Hyun Suk. The contract was possible because we wanted to come up with a group focused on their natural beauty.”
YG Entertainment had a similar contract with their past R&B group, BIG MAMA. But the move is rarely seen with idol groups that usually put a lot of emphasis on their appearances. In particular, YG’s new girl group has been advertised as a group with “good looks,” so the clause is garnering a lot more attention.
“Plastic surgeries are good in some ways, but at the same time, it decreases the natural beauty of the members. People in YG are satisfied with Yang Hyun Suk’s decision,” the official added. “After seeing so many girl groups with beautiful faces, we started to question what they would look like with YG’s music. So think of it as any YG group that values musical skills first, combined with the beautiful looks. You’ll get to see a girl group you haven’t seen in the industry yet.”
It was reported earlier this month that Kim Eun Bi of “Superstar K2” will be in the group.

Yang Hyunsuk talks about the promotion plans for Lonely

2NE1 will not but performing their new song on cable broadcasting music programs this time around as well. Instead, they will be revealing several different versions of 'Lonely' through their internet broadcast, YG ON AIR.

On the 12th at 12AM, shortly after 2NE1 released their emotional song, Lonely, and even until now, it has swept up top positions on several representative music charts including Melon, Dosirak, Soribada, mnet.com, Monkey3, etc. It is the next contender for the number one spot conquest after Park Bom's solo song that was released at the end of April, 'Don't Cry'.

However just like Park Bom, 2NE1 will not be making an appearance with 'Lonely' on existing music programs.

YG's head, Yang Hyun Suk, had told Star News this afternoon, "These are my personal thoughts but I think it's a shame that for over ten years, talented artists continuously have the same performances, the same camera angles, etc. on formal music programs that are almost all identical. ", "This is because they cannot properly show individual artists' talents and their music."

Moreover, "These days, if you look at how a lot of people are obsessed and interested with 'I'm a Singer', you would know where to find the answer.", "'I'm a Singer' is different from other music programs in the respect that artists are able to sing with top-quality sound systems and unique stage set-ups. The fans also focus on the music and like it even more."

"With this in mind, 2NE1, like with Park Bom's Don't Cry, will not perform 'Lonely' on music programs.", "Instead, every Friday, starting next week, they will show several different versions of Lonely to fans through YG on Air."

Yang Hyunsuk continued, "On YG ON AIR, they will be able to do stages that are created only for 2NE1, and the ones that 2NE1 wants to do.", "Fans who want to see 2NE1's performances can do so by watching YG ON AIR, and be able to concentrate on the musical aspect."

Meanwhile, Yang Hyunsuk emphasized, "In the situation where they have a song that is really emphasized on performances, 2NE1 will also realistically have to appear on music programs as well, however I think that this will be restricted to one show every week."

2NE1’s Bom wore a $20,000 USD Alexander McQueen dress in “Don’t Cry” MV

In 2NE1’s Bom’s comeback solo music video for “Don’t Cry“, fans noticed that she was wearing a posthumous work of designer Alexander McQueen.

The piece she’s wearing costs a whopping $20,000 USD, but according to fashion industry representatives, the dress has the potential to cost more since it’s McQueen’s final creation before his death.

The dress was under possession by McQueen’s family, but after finding out that McQueen had worked with Big Bang and 2NE1 in the past, they accepted Yang Hyun Suk’s request to feature it in Bom’s latest music video.

YGE to produce Big Bang’s future albums in the same design as 4.5 repackaged album

The high quality of Big Bang’s newest 4.5 repackaged album has recently been garnering much interest, as the group raises a new standard in the design of collectible music albums.

Shaped in the form of a white, hard plastic case, the CD album measures at 15×18x3 centimeters, making it a thicker and bigger case than the standard CD case size.

Not only did the agency put in thought to the design, but also the organization of the album cover. If you slightly press on the area where it reads “BIG BANG“, a sturdy ‘click’ is heard and a separate plastic case pops out with the CD on top, just like how it would come out of an audio player. The repackaged album also contains a photobook and a family card for fans to enjoy.

YG Entertainment has not yet decided whether all artists of their agency will use this specific design for future albums, however they have planned for Big Bang’s album cases to be produced in this design from this album forward. According to a representative, the unit cost for one album is at least a whopping 30 times more than a standard selling album.

YG Entertainment are particularly well known for putting in extra investments in the quality of their album designs and music videos. This isn’t the only time Big Bang has received attention for the price of their case designs, as their 2nd full album gained interest in the past for having a cost production five times greater than the standard.

“We put in effort to keep alive Big Bang and YG’s unique specialty. We’re constantly putting in thought so that albums don’t stop at just being things to listen to and become things that fans can enjoy looking at and having. Not only that, but we’re always researching on how to raise the standards of album collectibles in our current music industry”, stated a YG representative.

Sechskies’ Lee Jae Jin was the artist for Big Bang’s new album

Former Sechskies member Lee Jae Jin played a part in Big Bang’s new album.

On April 11th, a representative from YG Entertainment revealed, “In the ‘Big Bang Special Edition’ album that was released a few days ago, there were illustrations of the five members. The artist behind those sketches is none other than Sechskies’s Lee Jae Jin. Lee Jae Jin has considerable talent in drawing and animation, and he was able to exhibit his skills in this album. Lee Jae Jin’s drawings are also a great gift for Big Bang fans.”

In fact, Lee Jae Jin is planning to study animation and design in Japan. He is studying Japanese at the moment and preparing for his studies abroad.

The representative continued, “Lee Jae Jin no longer has any lingering desire to be a singer. After studying animation in Japan, he hopes to find a job [as an animator].”

An interesting fact is that Lee Jae Jin is the older brother of Sweety’s Lee Eun Joo, who is married to YG CEO Yang Hyun Suk.

Yang Hyun Suk thanks the members of Big Bang

YG Entertainment’s Yang Hyun Suk expressed his gratitude towards Big Bang for renewing their contracts with another five years today.

On the morning of April 7th, he stated through Star News:

“I just want to take the time to thank the five members of Big Bang for showing their trust in our company. We won’t be holding back in our support to ensure that the boys will be presenting their fans with amazing music.

YG’s motto has always been a family-like relationship with all of our artists. G-Dragon and Taeyang were trainees in YG ever since they were in elementary school. The remaining members have been with us since they were all young, they’re really like true family members to us. Through this contract renewal, I’ve come to realize that once again.

Fans will be able to see a new side to the group through their special edition album on the 8th. I’d be really thankful if you continue to show your interest in Big Bang.”

The group debuted back in 2006, and with five years under their belt now, fans can expect five more years, and possibly beyond, together.

Bigbang prepares for their new album with famous producers

Big Bang appears to be dead-set on making 2011 their year, as they’ve just announced plans for another album release!
On March 17th, representatives of YG Entertainment spoke through Star News and revealed, “Big Bang will be promoting in Korea a lot this year, and are currently preparing for a new album that will surprise fans.”
According to YGE, Big Bang plans to head straight back into the recording studio once they wrap up their “Tonight” promotions and their Japanese tour. It’s also being reported that the boys will work hand-in-hand with huge international producers.
Representatives continued, “Any music fan will be able to know who these producers are just by the mention of their names. They’re well-known figures in the U.S. and Europe, and we’ve been in contact with them for a while now. After we finalize the list of producers Big Bang will be working with, they’ll be going straight into their album production.”
Yang Hyun Suk added, “We’re currently in contact with about 10 producers known worldwide in order to produce their next album. Their labelmates, 2NE1, previously worked with Will.I.Am, and Big Bang will be doing just that with another famous European producer. Because Big Bang has their own producer within the group - G-Dragon - the album will be a form of collaboration between the producers and G-Dragon.”

Big Bang finds further obstacles in the way of their appearance on "Music Bank"

Much debate has been taking place over the past few weeks regarding Big Bang’s appearance on KBS’s “Music Bank,” and although the producer for the show was open to giving Big Bang a comeback stage, recent updates have shown that it isn’t looking good for both parties.

According to information revealed by one broadcast representative, producers of ‘Music Bank’ were reported to have responded negatively to YG Entertainment’s appearance offer. While they previously offered Big Bang a two-track comeback stage, producers were revealed to have changed their stance to one that gave the impression of “If you agree to sing one track, then you can come.”

Regarding the issue, YG Entertainment’s promotion team responded, “Honestly, there has been nothing decided yet. We are continuing to work with ‘Music Bank’ over Big Bang’s appearance.”

Since “Music Bank” operates on a unique music chart system that awards points for broadcast appearances, Big Bang might actually be eliminated from the ‘K-Chart’ itself if they fail to appear on the program.

Ever since SBS aired their extravagant one-hour special on the boys’ comeback, KBS has been cautious of Big Bang’s comeback, especially now that there are talks of “Inkigayo” offering a three track, possible four track, comeback performance.

Fans have been expressing their disappointment over the issue by voicing concerns, such as, “Isn’t this being too hard on them?”

'2NE1 Mystery', exactly how many albums have been sold?

“What are the actual sales amounts?”

Netizens are tilting their heads and pondering about how many first albums have actually been sold.

2NE1's management, YG Entertainment, stated recently, “According to a gross amount from all the retailers, 2NE1’s album has sold about 100,000 copies in a matter of 5 days.” However, according to the Hanteo charts, only 25,300 copies have been sold as of the 16th. To this the netizens stated, “Even though YG had counted all the retailers, there is a big difference between the numbers from YG and the numbers from Hanteo charts.” Hanteo Charts states that they set the total sales amount for the album after a poll from the different malls and stores in Korea.

Some opinions about the issue included the chance of the exchanges being made on the YG e shop for the albums have not been included in the Hanteo charts. This would have been a probable opinion except that YG Entertainment had already stated that the sales made on their site will count in the Hanteo charts as well. To this, many fans commented, “Isn’t the exaggeration from YG hurting the positive imagine of 2NE1?”

On Sunday 24th YG released through his blog info on Big Bang’s new album. On the published picture,“2011.02.24″ was written, the date of their return “4th Mini Album” was written as well.
Since 2009 Big Bang has been working on their solo careers and separate units, thus songs under all of BIG BANG have not been released until now that their comeback has been confirmed.

Representative of YG Entertainment Yang Hyun-seok, stated “On the 24, BIGBANG will release their 4th mini album. Except for the intro, all six songs are planned to be promoted at the same time.” he said.

Big Bang comeback on 24th, are you trembling music industry?

On the 14th, YG revealed Bigbang’s comeback teaser image on YG’s official blog and announced that ‘on February 24 Bigbang’s 4th Mini Album will be released’. Bigbang after releasing their second full album with ‘Sunset Glow’ as its title track in November 2008, the members caused sensations in the music industry through their solo and unit activities.
After YG confirmed Bigbang’s comeback date, singers, from singers who have not debuted to top-class singers, are trying to change their debut and comeback dates. A spokesperson from an agency that is preparing a new idol group mentioned, “There are no benefits in releasing an album when Bigbang releases its album. We are planning on postponing the debut date to after March”.

Some popular solo artists who were likely to release their albums in March are also trying to postpone their album release dates. Those who had a hard time picking a comeback day in January because of big stars such as DBSK(TVXQ) are facing the same problem now after Bigbang’s comeback date was confirmed.
The music industry is also paying sharp attention to the news that Bigbang is releasing a mini album, not a full album. Many are speculating that Bigbang is not going to end their group activities with just a mini album after a two year break. Considering YG’s unconventional style of doing things, many are guessing that Bigbang’s third full album could be released after the mini album.
The fact that YG and Bigbang have been putting in their best efforts for this comeback supports this speculation. Bigbang went to the States just two weeks (on February 7) before the ‘Bigshow’, which will be Bigbang’s comeback stage for the new album, and filmed a high-budget music video there.
We can speculate that Bigbang will not only release a mini album but maybe something more because Bigbang members, who produce their own music and work on their album until they are satisfied, have waited for two years to confirm a comeback date.
The ‘BIGSHOW’, the concert which many are looking forward to, is at the Seoul Olympic Park Stadium from the 25th to the 27th. Unlike many other idol groups, Bigbang is making its comeback through their ‘Bigshow’ Concert, not through television programs.
The music industry and fans are also very curious about the broadcasting station and the scale of the comeback stage that will be performed. Bigbang’s comeback is definitely a hot issue.

Is YG Entertainment the solution to the Korean music industry?

TVXQ, one of the top idol groups that started the idol Hallyu wave, is now being followed by KARA, the new leaders of the Hallyu wave in Japan, and both are on the verge of disbandment.  The disputes between artist and company weren’t contained internally, and now they’ve ruptured the exportation of Korean culture.
The current Korean music industry is going all out in creating idol groups, as many are of the belief that there’s nothing better than a smart little idol group in achieving jackpot success overseas.  H.O.T started the boom, and were followed by the successes of both Shinhwa and TVXQ.  Unfortunately, the disturbing reality of the majority of these groups is that they don’t ’stay whole’ forever.

Companies prepare years and millions of money in the creation of such idol groups, while the chosen members give up their youth for the success of the company’s future.  With hundreds of new idol groups debuting a year, idols are lucky if they can get at least their song heard once to the public.

The efficacy of idol groups is now being put to the test, with companies emerging from the dark while complaining about their inability to create a profit, and top idols claiming that no matter how hard they danced and sang, they were “still cold and hungry.”  Which side is speaking the truth?

Money lies at the root of the problem.  Companies reason, “We worked to the bones in order to create you,” while idols retort, “We’ve done all that we had to, now give us what we deserve.”  The addition of family members only complicates the issue further.

Before anyone even begins to fully understand the situation, both parties begin to destroy each other while fans divide and their influence in the international market collapses.

Amidst such controversies in the industry, YG Entertainment seems to be beckoning the Korean music industry towards a better path because they know the solution to coexistence between a company and its employee.

The solution is surprisingly simple.  YG’s CEO once stated, “What belongs to them must go to them.”  He gives his artists the freedom to perform music fit to their individual desires, and lends his unending support in ensuring that their dreams are realized.

The CEO is also often seen making affectionate statements towards his own groups, such as “I really hope Big Bang lasts a long time” and “I think preciously of 2NE1.“  His artists respond to such love by affectionately talking about him on broadcast programs.

No matter what the answer is, what’s definite is that YG Entertainment lies one step aside from an industry plagued by divisions in idol groups.

It’s common sense that there will be less fights if everyone is full and happy.  There’s an old Korean saying that even ravens repay favor, and if people want talented idols to properly get their sound heard by music fans and conquer the international market, people that throw away others for their own selfish greed must disappear.

Seungri to perform at "M! Countdown" on January 20th!

Big Bang's maknae Seungri has finally revealed the date for his first comeback performance as a solo artist!

On January 16th, the star wrote on his Me2day, "M! Countdown comeback Seungri". YG Entertainment representatives then confirmed on the 17th, "The release date of Seungri's solo album will also see his first broadcast appearance through Mnet's M! Countdown."

CEO Yang Hyun Suk added to the hype by revealing his thoughts on Seungri's album. "As I watched over the production of Seungri's mini-album, I considered it to be an ambush. It may be because this is the first time he wrote and composed most of the songs on his own, but the album is also the production of YG's newest producers as well. The album produced something that exceeded my expectations."

Big Bang’s faces photoshopped onto Secret Garden bodies

The popularity of Secret Garden is surely showing as photos of Big Bang members’ faces photoshopped onto actors from Secret Garden are revealed, causing quite a stir online.

In the photos, TOP becomes Kim Joowon (played by Hyun Bin), and Big Bang‘s maknae Seungri turns into Gil RaIm (played by Ha JiWon). Daesung and Taeyang‘s faces are photoshopped onto Oska (played by Yoon Sanghyun) and and Yoon Seul (played by Kim Sarang) respectively. Lastly, leader G-Dragon turns into Gil RaIm’s trainer, the only person without a partner.

Not only are Big Bang’s faces photoshopped onto the bodies of actors from Secret Garden, but YG Entertainment‘s president Yang HyunSuk is also a part of this parody. His face is put on Kim Joowon’s mother’s body, causing the most laughter among netizens.

The response to the pictures was great, as netizens only had good things to say. They had comments like, “That picture was just too funny,” “After the Big Bang parody of Infinity Challenge comes Secret Garden – this just proves how popular the drama truly is” and more.

YG's CEO finds the imitations of his voice entertaining

The voice imitation of YG Entertainment's CEO, Yang Hyun Suk, has been a popular variety show item for YG artists such as Big Bang, Se7en, 2NE1, and Gummy.

For the first time, the CEO himself spoke up on his voice imitations with Star News on January 12th by stating, "I've definitely seen our artists imitate my voice on a variety of variety programs. They've never done it once in front of me, so seeing them do it on variety programs made me think, 'Ah! So that's what they do when they hang out on their own.' But of course, I don't feel that it’s offensive at all. It's actually quite funny."

When asked to choose those he thought imitated him the best, he chose Psy, and Big Bang's G-Dragon and Seungri.

He reasoned, "I did see Jiyong and Psy imitate me on a broadcast program, and I laughed at how well they imitated me. Seungri did it at our YG Family concert last year and I thought he pulled it off quite well."

Highlights of GD&TOP on Night After Night

Lies
MC Tak Jae Hoon: “I heard that Lies was actually your solo track, but they decided to change it to Big Bang’s title song. They said you got so jealous, you cried.”
G-Dragon: “I was honestly disappointed. It took a long time to complete it, and then our CEO said that the song was for Big Bang. I was young at the time, so it hurt. I’m not upset about it anymore.”
T.O.P: “The song did well because we sang it. All five of us created a synergy effect. You can’t do anything about the past now, though.”
Daesung:Lies would’ve been buried if G-Dragon sang it by himself.” (which made the studio audience laugh.)

On debuting as an idol group
G-Dragon: “I was about six years into my trainee life with Taeyang. When I heard that they were making an idol group, I was kind of disappointed. My influence from the underground hip hop scene was strong at the time, so I wanted to debut as a hip hop artist.’”

The Samgyupsal Story
T.O.P: “At the time, the six of us would go eat samgyupsal after rehearsal, but it was always Daesung and Hyun Seung that would cook the meat for the hyungs. But one day, Daesung and Hyun Seung began wondering why it was only just them that cooked the meat, and why Seungri didn’t help out. Both of them tried to come up with a plan to make him cook too, and Hyun Seung finally asked him, ‘Hey, cook some meat.’ Seungri replied, ‘I can’t cook meat.’ Daesung didn’t follow the plan and stayed quiet, leaving Hyun Seung to do all of asking. Hyun Seung got mad the more he thought about it and retorted, ‘You think we’re cooking meat because we’re good at it?’ Seungri still replied, ‘I’m really not good at it.’ The situation didn’t end there, though. They went to go buy vitamin drinks together and their emotions exploded. They both came back later and Seungri opened the door, covered half his face, and said, ‘I didn’t get hit that much!’”
[Eventually, G-Dragon and T.O.P took the role of ‘hyungs’ and reprimanded their behavior, including Daesung (who was just soundly sleeping at the time).]

T.O.P's original name was Mark?
T.O.P: (Imititating President Yang) “There’s two rappers in Big Bang, right? Jiyong will be G-Dragon, and I’ve chosen ‘Mark’ for your name. No special reason, my favorite guitarist’s name was Mark. That’s the only name I can think of.”
[He didn’t like the name, requested to have it changed, leading senior labelmate Se7en to name him T.O.P.]
T.O.P: “At first, I was embarrassed of being called T.O.P when I was just a rookie. Now, I think it’s easier to memorize.”

G-Dragon talks about the plagiarism issue
Posted earlier here

The "roots" of G-Dragon's music
G-Dragon: “The source of my music… I think it comes from habit. CEO Yang would always make us compose a song once a week and submit it to him during our trainee days. It’s become a habit now. I listen to the experiences of other people.”
MC: How many songs have you registered in the Copyright Association:
G-Dragon: “I have about 100.”

Have you ever broken a woman’s heart?
G-Dragon: “I have, and I’ve also been hurt in return. For the most part, I think I was hurt the most, but there’s no other special reason for break ups. One time, I took a girl friend home to the wrong house.”

T.O.P winning his rookie award
T.O.P: “I was skeptical as to whether I’d receive an award while I had my hair bleached. I was honestly very embarrassed. It made me look as if I specifically bleached my hair for the event. Kang Sooyeon looked at my hair and complimented it, but then she couldn’t hide her laughter and burst out of the room.”
MC: Would you return the award then?
T.O.P: “I can’t do that, but right after winning the award, the first thing I thought was, ‘I’m so happy I won a award that you can only win once in your lifetime, but why when my hair is bleached white?!’”

Working as GD&TOP
G-Dragon: “Ever since T.O.P filmed for ‘Into the Fire,’ he doesn’t move around on stage that much. Compared to him, I fly around everywhere. It feels like he’s the uncle and I’m the nephew.”
T.O.P: “G-Dragon told me to balance the center, like with Big Bang, so that he can fly above. I thought that the concept he wanted this time was to ‘fly’. The balance has to be just right, so I figured I’d stand center while he flies around.”
