Girls’ Generation’s Sooyoung would rather be called an artist than idol

Girls’ Generation debated whether they were artists or idols.
The girls recently participated in a documentary on Japanese channel, MBS, where they talked about their Japanese activities and tour. During their interview, the girls were asked, “Is Girls’ Generation an idol group or an artist?“.

Jessica answered, “To be honest, it’s an honor to be called an idol. The word ‘idol’ is like that. But recently, the meaning has changed a little bit. Now, if you’re young, you’re just labeled as an idol. Idols and artists are considered different.

Sooyoung stated, “It’s hard to differentiate between idols and artists, but I want to be called an artist.Yuri added, “I don’t think you can differentiate yourself as an idol or an artist. We’re just following people’s perceptions.

Siwon “I’m More Handsome Than Jung Woosung? Don’t Joke Around”

Super Junior member Choi Siwon turned into an “action-dol” in the SBS Monday/Tuesday drama ‘Athena: Goddess of War’. Playing the character of NTS special agent Kim Junho who has a painful past, he shows off his strong acting skills alongside Jung Woosung, Cha Seungwon and more.
In the hostage battle scene, when innocent citizens were sacrificed after committing a mistake, he was reluctant to step back into the incident site because of guilt, but had to be bear with the feelings and was deployed back to the field once again. Before debuting with Super Junior, Choi Siwon has acted in the Korea-China-Japan collaborative movie ‘Battle of Wits’ alongside Andy Lau and Ahn Seunggi, and has also accumulated acting experiences through dramas such as ‘Precious Family’ and ‘Eighteen, Twenty Nine’.
This year, he made his presence felt through the drama “Oh! My Lady”, of which he had taken the lead role with Chaerim. In ‘Athena’, he displays a strong appeal which was not inferior to his seniors. He is the key figure in the story’s development, in which his presence will be slowly expanding as the events unfold. On various message boards, there are also a lot of comments who mentioned that they were excited about Choi Siwon(‘s role).
- Feelings about taking on an authentic action scene.
“It was my dream since I was young. I’m really happy to be able to be a part of the counterintelligence team in a blockbuster drama. It’s a burden, but it’s exciting.”
- There are a lot of seniors at the filming site. Are there anyone who gives you advices?
“There are a lot of scenes where I appear with Jung Woosung sunbaenim, (so) he would monitor me directly during the scenes. Although I do not have any scenes where I would be with Cha Seungwon sunbae, he would also monitor me, even to the extent of calling me up to give me various guidance. I’ve also received a lot of guidance from Yoo Donggeun sunbaenim.”
- Do you feel distant from a huge senior (like) Yoo Donggeun?
“On the contrary he would be the first one to approach the hoobaes. He’s worried that the hoobaes might feel distant, so he would try to show that he does care (about us). I’m really thankful for his gesture.”
- Did you get injured while filming the action scenes?
“There are quite a lot of injuries. However when compared to the others it’s nothing. When Woosung sunbaenim was filming in Italy, his legs were badly injured while filming the scene where he had to come out after smashing the glass. Nonetheless when he shot the following scene there was absolutely no changes in his facial expressions. He must be holding it in a lot. The female seniors were also injured while doing the more intense action scenes.”
- What do you think about the comments that said that you’re more good-looking than Jung Woosung?
“If there are a lot of comments like that the director can kill me off in the drama. (laughs) Actually I really liked Jung Woosung sunbae since I was young. Isn’t it a dream for all the boys to be like the movie actor Jung Woosung(?) There was one time where Jung Woosung sunbae mimicked a scene from “A Moment to Remember”, which said that ‘If you drink this then you’ll be my boyfriend’, and sunbae laughed and said that ‘You have to drink three cups’. There are also times where he would act out the motorbike scene from “Beat”. Don’t joke around by comparing me with the legendary handsome actor. Being able to act with him in a piece of work is an honor in itself.”
- Super Junior’s members have dabbled in dramas at the same time.
“Sungmin is currently acting in ‘President’, while Donghae makes an appearance in ‘It’s Okay, Daddy’s Daughter’. I’m very proud of the fact that the members are growing up in various aspects. I feel pride that Super Junior is having an impact on the Korean public’s culture through (our) subunit activities.”
- Do the members follow your activities well?
“If there’s a drama broadcast, the members will imitate my expressions or poses in the drama, and would joke around after learning the lines. That is our own way of expression. Because there are really a lot of activities that our members are involved in, (so) it’s hard to be able to follow every single thing. That’s why we would truthfully tell that we weren’t able to watch (the drama/activities), and admit that it’s our own fault.”
- You have attracted attention from the way you have taken care of Sooyoung when SNSD received the Daesang at the Golden Disk Awards.
“I was very happy after reading the article. I have a scandal with one of the members of SNSD who are the idols of the era. (laughs) Actually I grew up with Sooyoung when we were still trainees, and our relationship is that of a brother and sister. I think that the misunderstanding reflects the interest (in our relationship). Thank you everyone for your concern, I will work hard in order to become a better singer and actor.”

Idols reveal their filial acts on MBC’s “Come to Play”

A bevy of top idol groups made their appearance on MBC’s “Come to Play” today, and competed against each other to earn the title of ‘the most filial son/daughter.’

The episode focused on revealing the dutiful acts the idols have done for their parents and featured stars such as SNSD, Super Junior’s Lee Teuk and Yesung, B2ST’s Ki Kwang and Yoseob, and MBLAQ’s Lee Joon and Mir.

SNSD’s Seohyun, who’s known for her upright character, started off the discussion by revealing her self-sufficiency.  ”I think that the way I respect my parents is by doing what I’m supposed to do on my own.  From my mother’s perspective, she probably wants to take care of her young and busy daughter as much as she can, but I told her not to worry about it because I can do it on my own.  I think that unfortunately made her more upset because I was forced to mature so early.”

She continued, “Of course, other physical presents are just as precious, but as their daughter, I think growing up without being fussy is a bigger present for them.  I will become a daughter that works hard on improving herself and does not make her parents worry.”

Reflecting on Seohyun’s response, fellow member Yuri commented, “Seohyun would be a good daughter, but not as mine.  She knows what she has to do on her own, where’s the fun in that?

MBLAQ’s Mir, who’s known to be the son of a farming family, revealed that he bought his family four cows.  He stated, “My family lives in the countryside, and the rivalry between the front and back house is quite strong.  I wanted my dad to feel steady and confident.  I was going to buy him two cows, but the house behind us bought three, so I bought him four.”

Super Junior’s Yesung revealed his own story by stating, “I’ve lived away from my parents for a long time.  I’ve always wanted to live with them, and one day, they came down to Seoul.  I opened up a small store for them.” After receiving a round of applause, he continued, “It’s a small restaurant, but I forgot to think of my mother’s health.  She has a hard time working in the kitchen, so I’m trying to look for ways to convert it into a cafe.

SNSD’s Sooyoung confessed, “These days, my mom keeps telling me to date.  This year, I’m going to be a filial daughter and finally get a boyfriend that fits her expectations.

Sunny also brought laughter to the studio when she joked, “The fact that I was even born is a filial act!” More seriously, she continued, “My mother was in bad health after she gave birth to me, but she fought to live on in order to raise me.

Hyoyeon revealed, “I registered a housing premium under all of the names of my family.” Reflecting to a time when she didn’t feel as comfortable on variety shows, she said, “When you appear on TV programs like this, you have to say a lot of things and such, but even up to six months ago, I wasn’t able to.  I feel like that wasn’t a very filial act towards my parents.  I didn’t have a lot of confidence in talking on variety programs so it was hard for them to see me on TV.  I fixed my pronunciation by reading books and learned to improve myself.”

Later on in the program, the idol boys attempted to earn the hearts of the SNSD members.  Mir bragged, “I have a 400-pyeong sized house in our backyard.  In the Bang household, we have eight mountains and dogs and cows that cover our entire mountain.”

Super Junior’s Lee Teuk attempted to capture he ladies’ hearts by bragging, “I’m the first idol MC.  I’m a fixed cast member on seven programs, and tour 15 Asian countries on the weekends.”

Yesung bragged about his philtrum (the indent above the upper lip) by stating, “They say you’ll live a long life when your philtrum is long.  I’m a man better than a diamond, I last forever.”

Finally, B2ST’s Ki Kwang showed off his bow to the camera in the hopes of charming SNSD’s parents, and then began showing off his strength, leading the SNSD members to burst out in laughter.

In the end, the couples that paired up were Yoona and Yesung, Yuri and Mir, Seohyun and Lee Teuk, Sooyoung and Gil, Hyoyeon and Lee Joon, and Taeyeon and Lee Haneul.

Taeyeon and Lee Haneul ended up winning the grand prize through a quiz battle.  After winning, Taeyeon stated, “I think I was able to earn this ‘filial award’ because I was part of a couple with Haneul oppa.  I’m thankful for Haneul oppa!

The special episode recorded 14.1% in viewer ratings according to AGB Nielsen Media Research, a 0.3% rise compared to last week’s episode.

CNBLUE’s Kang Min Hyuk was almost cast for “You’re Beautiful”

CNBLUE’s Kang Min Hyuk revealed a story of changed fate while making an appearance on the November 30th episode of SBS’s “Strong Heart.

He began, “I received an opportunity to audition for a Korean drama one day. I had to basically rival with Jung Yong Hwa for a role in SBS’s ‘You’re Handsome.’ We practiced acting with each other and I was definitely better than him at acting. In fact, Yong Hwa-hyung had a very awkward time with it, so I was sure that the opportunity would bend in my favor. I felt that I’d be able to become a somebody if I received the ‘Kang Shin Woo’ role.

He continued, “I was devastated when I heard that Yong Hwa-hyung got the role while in Japan. I started crying and begging our CEO to give me another chance because I was so hurt. I later heard from the director that my cute image didn’t fit with the ‘Kang Shin Woo’ character, which was why he chose Yong Hwa-hyung. I was really upset every time I read articles calling Yong Hwa-hyung ‘towel man’ or ‘milk man.’ I always thought that it was my spot.”

SNSD’s Sooyoung, who had been listening on, added her own story in order to console him, “Originally, Park Ha Sun’s role in the movie ‘Fool‘ was mine. But if I had done that role, I don’t think I could’ve joined SNSD. I think that everyone has their own time and place.”

Yuri feels pressured by the focus on SNSD’s legs

SNSD’s Yuri shared her thoughts about the popularity of SNSD’s legs in Japan during her appearance on the November 30th episode of SBS’s “Strong Heart.”

Yuri began by stating, “In Japan, they call us the ‘beautiful legs group’ because they think our legs are beautiful. Honestly though, our legs aren’t that pretty. Only a few of us have nice legs, but they keep the focus point on our legs a lot.”

SNSD’s hit song, “Genie,” was especially popular for its ‘kick’ dance. Their shorts and choreography accentuated and emphasized their long legs, but Yuri explained that the pressure was too much.

All nine of us do not have pretty legs. Sooyoung, Tiffany, and a few others have very nice long legs but the rest of us are either short or thick. My legs, realistically, have a bit of meat on them as well so there’s a lot of pressure when cameras focus on them“, she confessed.

Yuri then revealed the secrets behind managing their legs, “Our legs get more makeup than our faces in order to hide any scars and bruising.”
