Yahoo Japan's Top Searched Celebrities

Yahoo Japan recently released data for the top searched terms in 2011 for male entertainers, female entertainers, and sport athletes. From the list of 20, a whopping 18 spots were filled by Koreans.

The ranking took the aggregate data from search queries on Yahoo Japan from January 1st to October 31st. Out of the top 20, only Lady Gaga at #5 and Avril Lavigne at #17 were non Koreans:

Supernova's Yoonhak enlists in the army

Yoonhak, the leader of pop group Supernova, officially enlisted in the army earlier today. He reported around 1:30 PM KST at the 306 Squadron in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi.

The boy group member wasn't left alone, as about 1,000 fans gathered to send him off for duty. It was reported that 14 buses full of Japanese fans lined up in front of the military camp. In addition to a huge fan turnout, Yoonhak was joined by no less than 20 different media reporters from Korea as well as Japan.

Yoonhak himself was accompanied by all Supernova members, as well as his mother. After a basic military training, he will be deployed to serve for his country. It was earlier reported that he will be serving about 20 months instead of the usual term, as he was rewarded a shorter draft because of his studies.

Supernova's Kwangsu hints at possible Korean comeback and official Korean fanclub

After having just recently returned to Korea for another fanmeeting and Yoonhak's enlistment on October 25th, Supernova's Kwangsu has revealed a long message to his fans through the group's official fancafe.

In the long text the rapper relays about his feelings after the Korean fanmeeting last weekend, saying that he didn't expect so many people to show up as they haven't been as active in Korea. He also said sorry to the Korean fans who have been neglected during the past years, and was grateful for their continued support.

He also insists on trying to get the group's official Korean fanclub going, and even jokingly asked fans to pressure their company's president into making them one.

Aside from that, Kwangsu also hinted at a Korean comeback for the group early next year in either February or March, saying that they will do their best to keep the promise this time. Next to the album, various individual schedules for the members will also be revealed. Rumors of them being casted in Korean, as well as Japanese drama series have already been going around.

Supernova has been actively working on their Japanese career for the past years. With their leader's enlisting, the group returned to Korea to spend time with their families and Korean fans.

The group will continue to promote as a 5 member group until their leader Yoonhak returns.

"We want to tell the children. Have Big Dreams" - Interview with Tohoshinki & 16 others kpop groups

Tohoshinki, SHINee, BEAST, MBLAQ, 2PM, 2AM, Supernova, FT Island, SG Wannabe, Miss A, Secret, SISTAR, f(x), 4minute, IU and ZE:A – A total of 16 groups of artists came together in the Live event “Tokyo Legend 2011.” This is the first time such a grand K-pop event has been attempted in Japan, and before the performance, there was a press conference held on the same day (14 May), at the concert location Saitama Super Arena.

This performance is in support of the UN’s MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) of poverty relief project, the GFSC (Good Friends Save the Children) charity campaign and sends a “Love & Peace Message.” Also, there was the theme of “Let’s Get Up! Japan, Pray for JAPAN!!” sending a message of, as well as actual resource support from the performers to the areas affected by the Tohoku Earthquake, bringing hope to the children.


At the start of the press conference, all 16 groups of artists shared a moment of silence to express their sympathies for the victims of the earthquake. Then, the performing artists introduced themselves one by one, and spoke about their determination for this Live.

Supernova to focus on Korean promotions this year

Hallyu idol group Supernova revealed that they’ll be concentrating on their Korean activities this year as ‘actor idols.’

In an interview with Newsen, a representative of their agency revealed, “They’ve been receiving a lot of love in Japan lately and have mainly focused on their Japanese promotions. This year, they’ll be paying extra attention to their Korean activities and promote for as long as possible.”

He continued, “Last year, they were only able to promote for four weeks in Korea, causing many fans to feel disappointed.  They’ll be releasing a Korean album this March that features a lot more ‘weight’, in comparison to their Japanese releases.”

Supernova will also embark on their acting activities as well. A few of the members have already gone into official preparations, as member Kwang Su has a role in MBC’s upcoming sitcom, “Real School“, while Sungje and Sung Mo will be entering the musical industry through “Really Really Like You” and “Coronation” respectively.

Geon Il was the first member from the group to debut as an actor via the 2009 mini-series, “Soul.”
Consequently, he’s received the most love calls from drama productions, and is currently in discussions for his next project. Leader Yoon Hak completed filming in Japan recently for the NHK’s drama series, “Loving Kimchi.” His drama begins airing next month.

Jihyuk is also auditioning for various dramas, and has fitted acting classes into his schedule.

The representative continued, “Unlike other idols, all of the members of Supernova are able to take up an acting career.  They’ve been training in acting ever since their debut.  We’ve been receiving many drama offers, but we’re taking our time in selecting roles that best fit each member.  Please look forward to them.”

Why haven’t T-ara made advancements into the Japanese market yet?

T-ara have been receiving endless love calls from popular music agencies in Japan, however, just like last year, T-ara have decided to take their Japanese advancement slowly.

But why?

On January 4th, Core Contents Media told Money Today Star News, “Ever since their popular hits “Bo Peep Bo Peep” and “I’m Going Crazy Because of You” last year, T-ara have been receiving endless calls from Japanese agencies. We filmed a Japanese CF together with Supernova last year, however, we’ve always made cautious decisions regarding advancements music-wise.”

As the Japanese market is currently favoring the successful advancement of girl groups SNSD & KARA, T-ara’s much more cautious approach on this matter have gotten both fans and other Korean agencies wondering on Core Content Media’s reasons behind this approach.

“We’ve wanted T-ara to become all-round idols right from the beginning. In the changing generation, we believe it is more appropriate for idol stars to reach for their fans with a variety of strong points rather than just one charm. Even the members shared the same opinions,” stated Kim Kwang Soo, CCM’s CEO.

He continued, “This is why Eun Jung, Jiyeon, Hyomin, Soyeon and Boram participated in acting, variety, and musical activities throughout last year. We will continue with that approach this year, and we feel this is strengthening the endurance of the members.”

Kim concluded, “Since we have more plans in mind after their various schedules, we have been taking the Japanese advancement into cautious consideration. However, as we are still receiving calls from Japanese agencies, we expect to share good news in the near future.”

The decision to take a more calculated approach to T-ara’s advancement into Japan could certainly have its benefits, especially if the end result is well planned and involves them promoting actively in a variety of ways.
 However, their fans have already been waiting for quite some time, and not striking while the iron is hot could cost them potential profits and popularity as well.

Supernova shares thoughts on Japanese activities and Korean comeback

After wrapping up their sold-out showcase in Japan’s Yokohama Arena on December 21st, Supernova met with reporters at a post-conference and revealed their thoughts on completing a successful year overseas.

Supernova started, “We’re extremely thankful for so many fans outside of Japan and Korea coming to visit our ‘Supernova Show 2010.’  It’s because of everyone’s support that we’ve made it this far.”

The group previously recorded all six of their concerts selling out and went on to add, “Our main purpose was to properly deliver K-POP music.  The songs we promoted in Korea with fit well with the strategies we used in Japan.”

Their concert itself was nothing short of a hit, as it managed to gather over 12,000 fans of all age groups.  The group performed  a total of 28 different tracks, including “Get Wild,” “Ai Kotoba,” “Love Letter,”  and many others.  They also introduced a few Korean songs as well, including their August hit track, “On Days I Miss You,” a Christmas carol, “La La La,” and “My Memory.”

Their fans also refused to budge once the concert came to an end, only started filing out after the boys performed three encores.

One of the more interesting points of the concert was that an interpreter would not have been found on the scene, as all six members are fluent in Japanese.  All of the productions held on stage were delivered 100% in Japanese, confirming the group’s status as the Korean idol group with the most natural speech.

A production manager from their Japanese team commented, “Supernova reached out to a large variety of audiences through singing for dramas, which mothers watch, and helped K-pop become more largely accepted.  Their skills are exceptional and they have a stable fanbase as well.”

Member Yoon Hak stated, “Our Japanese tactic was to use the K-pop style as a base.  Our recent track, ‘Shining Star,’ was produced by Brave Brothers and ranked fourth on the Oricon chart.”

Sungje continued, “Of course there are difficulties.  We thought a lot about giving up because we couldn’t achieve much success in Korea.  Instead of giving up, however, we grouped together even tighter and learned Japanese as if our lives were on the line.”

When asked to reflect on the amount of love they’ve been receiving three years into their debut, Supernova continued, “When we first came to Japan, we weren’t able to contract with a distribution company.  We had to study Japanese and personally visit record companies.  There were a lot of times we wanted to give up, but those feelings developed into wanting to try even harder.  With that determination, we’ve made it this far.”

Regarding the many K-pop groups crossing over to Japan, such as SNSD, KARA, 4minute, the Brown Eyed Girls, B2ST, U-KISS and 2PM, member Yoon Hak continued, “K-pop is addictive and it’s difficult to not be seduced by it.  I hope that we can all support each other as juniors and seniors to achieve good results.”

Wrapping up the conference with comments on their future activities, Supernova disclosed, “We’ll be releasing a new album around March or April of 2011 in Korea.  We’ll also be participating in a wide range of genres such as musicals, sitcoms, and MCing positions.”

Supernova sells out all 12,000 seats for “Supernova Show 2010″ in Japan

Male pop group Supernova has officially become one of the brightest Hallyu stars this year, as it was reported that they’ve sold out all 12,000 seats for their “Supernova Show 2010“.
But this is not the first time the group has sold out an event.

Tickets for their “Supernova Xmas Party 2010” (scheduled for December 25th in Kobe) have also been snatched up quickly, forcing fans to turn to secondary ticket-sellers in hopes of attending the event. The boys have also previously made headlines by selling out their Japanese tour, held from April through October.

Their agency, Maru Entertainment, expressed their joy by stating, “We’re able to confirm Supernova’s popularity through the amount of concerts they are selling out. The Arena concert will be Supernova’s biggest concert to date, and the fact that it has already sold out has absolutely elated the members.”

The group previously released “Shining ☆ Star” on the 8th, which ranked in at #2 on the daily Oricon chart.

“Shining ☆ Star” has become the 10th consecutive single to place on Oricon’s top 10.

MV teaser for KARA’s Jiyoung & Supernova’s Sungje “Merry Love” revealed

Recently we reported that Supernova’s Sungje and KARA’s Jiyoung will be releasing a new single titled “Merry Love” on December 16th. Recently, a video teaser for the upcoming MV was released.

Supernova’s agency, Maru Entertainment, stated, “On the 16th, Sungje and Kang Jiyoung will reveal their duet track, ‘Merry Love.” The track was reportedly produced by composer Park Geun Tae.

The two groups have been busy promoting in Japan, both ranking on Japan’s Oricon Singles chart and achieving a high level of success.

The two members added, “We wanted to prepare a special year-end present for our fans. Through this unique opportunity, we’d like to spread the potential of K-POP.”

There’s no official word yet regarding plans of promoting on Korean music shows, as Supernova will be heading back to Japan on the 21st for their individual concert.

With Christmas just around the corner, it's no surprise that several of K-pop's brightest stars are gearing up to release brand new music for fans to enjoy this holiday season.

Ballad king Park Hyoshin will be returning to the music scene with an official album on December 13th. On the same day, idol group SHINee will be releasing a brand new single.

December 15th marks the release date for G-Dragon and TOP's long awaited digital single, as well as V.O.S. Jihun's OST album.

Fans will be delighted to know that many collaborative singles will also be hitting music sites this month. Idol dance group Supernova & KARA's Kang Jiyoung will be releasing their collaborative single on December 16th, while BEAST and Davichi's track will be released on December 17th.

The auction money will be given to those 3,00,000 people who suffered from the flood. The project is a collaborate between Thai-Korean embassy and KTCC (Korea Thailand Communication Center) with the support form Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand to organize this event to promote the Korean fever in Thailand

SNSD, KARA and Big Bang are the most popular new Korean singers in Japan

 

Korean newspaper Hankyung reported that Girls' Generation SNSD is currently the most popular Korean pop artist in Japan. The newspaper used NTT Tokyomo's survey and reported, "Japanese people are most interested in Girls' Generation. Just like their name, they have made it their generation."

NTT Tokyomo held a survey from that asked, "Which K-pop idol are you the most interested in?" 9926 people participated in the survey.

SNSD won first with 3393 votes. With overwhelming popularity, SNSD garnered 22,000 fans at their first Japanese live concert. They even had to extend their concert that was originally scheduled for one stop and add 2 additional shows.

KARA was in 2nd place with 3192 votes. Their looks and hit single "Mister" butt dance was the main reason why they gained popularity. Their dance and outfits are being copied by many fans and even by other Japanese celebrities and artists.

In 3rd place was Big Bang, and 4th was Supernova. FT Island, SS501, Super Junior, 4Minute and SHINee were also ranked in this survey.

Supernova releases their “Shining Star” MV!

The six-member idol group, Supernova, have been dominating the Oricon charts by landing in the top 5 spots with almost every single they’ve released thus far.

They’ve just unveiled the MV for their newest Japanese single, “Shining Star“, and we’re pretty sure their ‘pelvic dance’ will become a hot topic (or at least a hot dance to emulate).

Big Bang #3 Korean group Japanese are interested in

Last September 18 October 2, the question, "Which South Korean idol group are you interested in?" was included in the regular rankings and surveys done by Goo Online and NTT DoCoMo Japan. With a total of 9926 respondents, BIGBANG, who are known for their creative fashion and music, ranked #3 with 1815 votes.

Full ranking is as follows: 1) SNSD [known for their catchy tunes and long, slender legs], 2) KARA [who became popular with their butt dance], 3) BIGBANG, 4) Supernova, 5) FTIsland, 6) SS501, 7) SUPER JUNIOR, 8) 4Minute, 9) SHINee and 10) Brown Eyed Girls.

f(x)'s Luna & SHINee's Onew Transform Into The 'Milk Couple'

For MBC's Idol Star Trot Competition, two idols paired up and put on a spectacular performance for the audience!

In honor of Chuseok, MBC decided to film a special segment called Idol Star Trot Competition, in which members from all different groups joined together and showed off their trot-singing skills. Idols that participated include members from 4minute, miss A, BEAST, U-Kiss, Supernova, Lee Hyun, Eru, LPG, SHINee's Onew, and f(x)'s Luna!

And the latter two definitely put on a show-stopping performance. Onew and Luna are both known as some of the best vocalists in the Kpop scene, so its no surprise that they would shine on stage together. Onew and Luna coupled up and transformed into Romeo and Juliet for their trot performance. They even went so far as to name themselves the 'Milk Couple,' which made the audience both envious and jealous!

Besides the wonderful 'Milk Couple,' the other groups also shed their previous images to put on shocking performances. BEAST left their powerful image behind as they donned outfits with sparkly gems, in true trot fashion. U-KISS also gave the crowd a cute performance compared to their usually hard-hitting songs. Even the girl groups decided to take up the challenge, as T-ara and SISTAR danced to the tango and showed off their dancing passion.

Supernova on their limp Korean debut and success in Japan

“First place? I’d rather have people know that we exist.”

Such a statement was surely not expected from a star that has been sweeping Japan’s Oricon chart. However, Supernova was not just being humble but actually expressing their one true wish in a recent interview with Donga News.
They returned to the Korean music industry with “Time To Shine” after a two years and six months hiatus. Having arrived in Japan last September, they’ve managed to land each of their nine singles into Oricon’s top 5 chart after only a year of promotion.
Supernova’s leader, Yoon Hak, stated, “It was hard to believe (our popularity) at first because there was such a large difference between Japan and Korea. Still, it was because of our Japanese promotions that we were able to return to Korea.”
Before their debut in 2007, Supernova garnered interest by being dubbed the ‘model group,’ and sometimes even being called “six Rains in one group.” Unfortunately, such attention was short-lived as the interest dropped soon after their debut.
Sungje commented, “There was nothing but the name ‘Supernova’ left in our place. Nobody cared about our music or our group. I was miserable. The more we promoted, the more anti fans we gained. No matter what we did, it seemed as if we could be nothing but the ‘ugly ducklings.’”
Geonil added, “In 2008, SG Wannabe held a concert in Japan. M to M was set to perform on stage but something happened, and we performed in their place. Fortunately, Yoon Hak hyung is good at Japanese and managed to catch the attention of representatives at the concert. Later, they came all the way to Korea and surveyed us.”
Leader Yoon Hak completed a degree in business administration at Japan’s Aichi University as a state scholarship student. “I found a new determination then. We had nothing to begin with anyway, so it was a good opportunity to start new.” Yoon Hak began to teach the members Japanese with his new-found determination. Impressed by his enthusiasm, the members soon began to learn on their own.
Supernova’s substitute performance at SG Wannabe’s concert brought in an endless amount of opportunities, earning the attention of famous music labels such as Sony, Pony Canyon, and Universal. Universal Japan showed the most active interest in them and finally managed to contract Supernova in 2009. They debuted September of the same year with their single, “Kimidakeotsuto,” which ranked 5th in Oricon’s daily single chart. Soon after, every single released managed to rank in the top 5, leading to their first ever large scale concert in Japan in October and December.
The “ugly ducklings” have finally emerged as “swans.”
Kwangsu proudly revealed, “In October, we’re holding a 6,000 seat concert at Tokyo Forum. The concert became sold out in under five minutes. We’re also holding another super arena concert in December with 12,000 fans attending. Our fanclub has over 10,000 members as well.”
But as they began to receive the love of the Japanese, their thirst for the Korean stage only grew deeper. Comments stating that they are now nothing more than a Japanese group also broke their hearts. Sungmo concluded, “Before we hold our Japanese concerts, I want to meet our Korean fans and earn their acknowledgment. We are not even thinking of going for first place in Korea yet as  we just want to make sure that people know Supernova exists. Also, we’ve ranked 2nd on Oricon a couple of times but not 1st yet. Until the day both are achieved, we will be working our hardest.”

Supernova compared the differences between idol groups in Korea and Japan and stated that different things are expected from each country. While Korea focuses on the musical aspect of idols, the Japanese focus on the variety show quality of idols. Therefore, this difference makes Korean idol groups a refreshing change for the Japanese who accept them as true musicians. Supernova pointed out that the best example of this is TVXQ.

“It is all thanks to our seniors TVXQ that we’re getting so much love from Japan. It should be known that TVXQ changed the Japanese perception of Korean idol groups and because of this, it has become easier to debut in Japan because the people there now pay more attention to K-pop.”
