KBS once again denies JYJ’s appearance on ‘Music Bank’

JYJ‘s agency and KBS are at it once again over the issue of JYJ’s appearance on KBS’s ‘Music Bank’.
Back in May, KBS left a note on their website explaining why JYJ was barred from appearing on their music program. The note read, “JYJ’s lawsuit has yet to come to an end, and KBS is objectively observing this lawsuit… From a business perspective, however, allowing a celebrity who is in the midst of a legal dispute to appear on a broadcast can have a negative impact. Therefore, their appearance on ‘Music Bank’ will not be allowed.”

Responding, JYJ had said, “The lawsuit regarding JYJ’s contract with SM Entertainment (which KBS was referring to) was already acknowledged by the court as lopsided and disadvantageous to JYJ, and the contract was subsequently nullified. We believe that KBS’s stance does not match up with the facts. We strongly request for them to make corrections on their part.”

As fans continued to vocalize their objections, KBS changed their stance to, “JYJ hasn’t been able to make an appearance because they haven’t released an official album. If they release an album, then of course they’ll be allowed to chart [on 'Music Bank'].”

Now that the boys have indeed released an official album (and it’s been doing quite well on the charts), fans revived their petitions to see JYJ perform on ‘Music Bank’. It seems that KBS is flip-flopping on the issue once again, however, as they released the following statement through their website on October 19th:

“Although the official album and the injunction situation has changed, the lawsuit between SM and JYJ is still in process. The court has not made an official decision. We have to put a hold on the appearance of a celebrity who is in the middle of a lawsuit, and see how it progresses; until a decision comes out, our position will not change.”

JYJ’s agency, C-JeS, stated, “JYJ is in the midst of a lawsuit to straighten out the unfair contract that violates the personal rights of an artist, and the court has declared that JYJ was allowed to continue on with their promotions a second time. If KBS sticks to this position, then they need to present evidence that they will determine the appearance of all celebrities through these same standards.”

“If KBS respects the decision of the courts, they need to carry out the court’s decision, which state that JYJ is free to carry out their promotions. They should fulfill their duty as a public broadcast station.”
JYJ is currently receiving a lot of love for their Korean album from within Korea as well as overseas, and is planning to embark on a world tour.

BEAST, wants to break the "'3 second singer' notion"

BEAST has revealed their intention to break away from the image of '3 Second Singers'

BEAST had recently released their first full length album 'Fiction and Fact,' and are promoting with their title song 'Fiction' and the ballad 'On Rainy Days.' 'Fiction' is a song about the sad feelings of a man who can't accept that the fact that he and his girlfriend had separated. By emphasizing the vocals and the melody line, it offers a different kind of charm compared to previous hit tracks such as 'Breath' and 'Shock.' Especially the way they move freely between falsetto and their natural voices, the members have been receiving praise such as 'As expected of BEAST,' 'True talent,' 'They seem to have gotten better at singing.'

Member Yang Yoseob has revealed he "wants to break the '3 second singer' notion." '3 second singer' refers to the idols that get only 3 seconds worth of singing time on stage while the main vocalist focuses on his own parts.

He said "It can't be helped that in groups, there's an emphasis on one member. So that the 3 second singer term is created. This time, our full length album may be like that as well but all the members wanted to show their live vocal talents." He added, "We really worked hard and improved a lot. Especially Dongwoon, he got so noticeably better. In order to show our developments, we tried to divide the parts as evenly as possible. You'll be able to ear other member's voices this time."

'Fiction' is a song that has the highest pitch in boy group songs. Wouldn't it be impossible to do live? Yang Yoseob says "Our schedules preparing for the comeback were really busy. Usually in a day we would record two songs, but when we had to redo recordings or record intro songs we would do a total of three songs in one day. Those parts were only difficult; I think it fit me better than 'Shock' or 'Breath.' It was easier to sing this time than before." But when asked 'Isn't it because you got better at singing?' he showed his humble image by responding "That's definitely not the case. I still am far from good."

With 'Fiction' and 'On Rainy Days,' BEAST had won first on Mnet's 'M Countdown' and KBS2's 'Music Bank' and are achieving a lot of popularity.

Music Bank criticized for its chart ranking system and "unfairness"

KBS’s “Music Bank” has been suffering due to the massive amounts of criticisms the music show is receiving.

The community board for Music Bank’s official site is being flooded with criticisms regarding its ‘unfair’ calculation of the first place winners, as well as cutting songs too short and allowing lip synching for certain singers.

Firstly, there are suspicions that Music Bank’s music ranking chart is causing some agencies to buy their singers’ albums in bulk. The show currently adds up the rankings in 4 areas: song ranking, album ranking, broadcasting points, and preference. If an agency buys up several thousands of albums in a day, its singer can rise to the number 1 selling song.

On one music site, a rookie actually placed 1st on the ‘most popular selling songs’ list, receiving many criticisms from the public. Some have been pointing fingers at the agency for buying up their singer’s albums to enter Music Bank’s chart.

Korea’s music market has died down, making it impossible to predict the popularity of a group of songs. In the past, it was possible for an album to sell a million copies. However, these days, even the top idol groups can barely sell 10,000 copies of their albums, making it easy for agencies to manipulate the song rankings by buying up albums.

One viewer wrote on the community board, “Isn’t Music Bank encouraging buying up albums and just looking on while agencies manipulate the song rankings?“.

There are also criticisms regarding the production team favoring certain singers. Big Bang’s fans have long been criticizing the music show’s ‘unfairness’ towards the group. During this week’s program, when Big Bang’s 1st place was for certain, ‘locked in’, the production team took out the 1st place award ceremony due to its 600th episode celebration.

Also, the program allows unpopular groups or even rookies to perform 2~3 songs but when Big Bang was having a comeback in 2 years and 3 months, they only got to perform one song.

Fans also criticized the poor treatment the original idol group g.o.d got from “Music Bank”. They appeared on April 23rd’s program and their performance seemed to end hurriedly to allow TVXQ to perform right after them.

Some angry viewers even commented, “Maybe it’s better just to end ‘Music Bank’.”

Big Bang and CNBlue take over weekend live music shows

CNBLUE and Big Bang each scored a win on weekly live music shows that aired on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

CNBLUE’s song “Intuition” was placed at No. 1 on KBS’ “Music Bank” for the third time as of last Friday. This is the song's seventh win on a televised music show following its three crowns on music cable channel Mnet’s “M! CountDown” which airs on Thursdays and single trophy SBS’ music program “Inkigayo” last Sunday.

“Intuition,” a song about one's ominous feeling of breaking up with a girlfriend, is from CNBLUE’s first regular album “FIRST STEP” that has sold over 100,000 copies nationwide since its release last month.

“We are so happy we're receiving so much love these days. It’s almost like a dream,” said CNBLUE's members in their acceptance speech the same day. “Thank you so much and we hope you like our follow-up songs ahead.”

★ On this Sunday’s “Inkigayo” show, it was Big Bang’s “LOVE SONG” that won the latest Mutizen Award, in the week of the song's debut.

“LOVE SONG” which expresses feelings after a love has passed away, is one of the title tracks to their special limited edition album released early this month.

Co-composed and written by G-Dragon and Teddy, the music incorporates elements of electronica and modern rock.

“We’re happy to win this award upon the first week of our return. We shall take it as a sign to work harder,” said the group’s leader G-Dragon as he went on to thank people in their agency who helped along the way.

Meanwhile other singers that appeared on the two live music shows over the weekend included U-Kiss, 4minute, Brave Girls, Rainbow, Clover, Dalmatian, Handsome People, Rania and Maya.

KBS Bans 4minute And Rania’s “Spread Leg” Dance

4minute
Best part of the video? Photo Credit: Cube Entertainment

We’re actually surprised broadcast stations allowed the choreography to be be preformed in the first place.

When Rania and 4minute‘s provocative choreography was revealed through their music videos, most of our readers thought the same thing — how long will it take before the dance is banned?

Music Bank‘s PD announced today that any groups who do not remove that portion of the choreography from their dance will not be allowed on Music Bank because of the show’s influence on younger viewers.

4minute’s agency put up a fight at first but has decided to change the dance. Rania’s agency has not made a statement yet.

Was the PD’s decision fair?

Big Bang overpowers TV music chart 3 weeks in a row

Five-member male group Big Bang dominated televised music charts for three straight weeks as of yesterday.

Big Bang's "TONIGHT," the title track to their fourth mini-album released in late February, again scored the highest rank on the K-pop chart of weekly KBS music program "Music Bank" for the third time followed on SBS' music show "Inkigayo," for the third week as well.

"Thank you for awarding us with this prize. That's all I wanted to say," said member Daesung during his group's acceptance speech on "Music Bank" held last Friday.

"Words can't describe how thankful we are for this award. We'll work harder to repay you with a stage that could truly touch your heart," said Big Bang members upon receiving the Mutizen Award on "Inkigayo" on Sunday.

This is Big Bang's ninth win in total including their three consecutive wins on music cable network Mnet's weekly music program "M! CountDown" which is being aired every Thursday.

Other singers that appeared on "Inkigayo" on Sunday included TVXQ, Wheesung, K.Will, MBLAQ, INFINITE, Lee Hyun, Kim Hyun-jung, ZE:A, Flower, CHI CHI, MF and Girls Day.

Big Bang finds further obstacles in the way of their appearance on "Music Bank"

Much debate has been taking place over the past few weeks regarding Big Bang’s appearance on KBS’s “Music Bank,” and although the producer for the show was open to giving Big Bang a comeback stage, recent updates have shown that it isn’t looking good for both parties.

According to information revealed by one broadcast representative, producers of ‘Music Bank’ were reported to have responded negatively to YG Entertainment’s appearance offer. While they previously offered Big Bang a two-track comeback stage, producers were revealed to have changed their stance to one that gave the impression of “If you agree to sing one track, then you can come.”

Regarding the issue, YG Entertainment’s promotion team responded, “Honestly, there has been nothing decided yet. We are continuing to work with ‘Music Bank’ over Big Bang’s appearance.”

Since “Music Bank” operates on a unique music chart system that awards points for broadcast appearances, Big Bang might actually be eliminated from the ‘K-Chart’ itself if they fail to appear on the program.

Ever since SBS aired their extravagant one-hour special on the boys’ comeback, KBS has been cautious of Big Bang’s comeback, especially now that there are talks of “Inkigayo” offering a three track, possible four track, comeback performance.

Fans have been expressing their disappointment over the issue by voicing concerns, such as, “Isn’t this being too hard on them?”
